The Pacifica Archives are a great historical record of Pacifica Radio =
and the progressive movement. KFCF will be carrying this momentous =
broadcast.....on Tuesday Nov 19th.... great programming ranging from =
Alan Watts to Malcolm X to Studs Terkel to Amy Goodman and much more....
See the schedule at http://www.pacificaradioarchives.org/new_grid.html
PACIFICA RADIO MOVES TO SAVE NATION'S OLDEST PUBLIC=20
RADIO ARCHIVE
SPECIAL FUNDRAISING DAY AIMS TO STEM DETERIORATION OF=20
RARE RECORDINGS, INCLUDING THE VOICES OF MALCOLM X,=20
MARGARET MEAD, LENNY BRUCE, BERTOLT BRECHT, AND OTHERS
LOS ANGELES, CA --In an effort to save and restore more=20
than 47,000 historic tapes that span half a century of=20
radio programming, the five-station Pacifica Radio=20
network will broadcast a national on-air fundraising=20
benefit on Tuesday, November 19, featuring rare=20
recordings from the endangered archives.
Considered by many historians and scholars to be one=20
of the most important audio collections in the world,=20
thousands of tapes in the Los Angeles-based Pacifica=20
Radio Archives are in danger of permanent damage=20
caused by aging. Library of Congress preservationists=20
have advised Pacifica to conduct an immediate review=20
of the endangered tapes and to transfer them to new=20
mediums, such as digital audio.
"This archive is a national and international=20
treasure," said J. Brian DeShazor, Manager of=20
the Pacifica Radio Archives. "And we must act now as=20
custodians of these rare and historic recordings=20
before it's too late."
Founded in 1949 by World War II conscientious objector=20
Lewis Hill, Pacifica Radio was created as the first=20
non-commercial, listener-sponsored radio station in=20
the United States. The Pacifica Radio Archives was=20
established in 1971 to house the audio tape collection=20
gathered from Pacifica Radio stations KPFA-94.1 FM in=20
Berkeley, KPFK-90.7 FM in Los Angeles, WBAI-99.5 FM in=20
New York, KPFT-90.1 FM in Houston, and WPFW-89.3 FM in=20
Washington D.C.
Starting with 10,000 tapes the archive has grown to=20
over 47,000 recordings covering more than 53 years of=20
public radio programming. As the fifty-three-year=20
leader in open access, First Amendment radio Pacifica=20
has broadcast programs of singular historical and=20
educational value, programs of people and events=20
commercial media did not document well, if at all. The=20
Pacifica programs have won distinguished citations=20
including many Armstrong, Peabody, and Ohio State=20
awards.
The November 19 marathon broadcast will include rare=20
recordings of internationally known writers, political=20
activists, religious leaders and entertainers such as=20
Ann Sexton, Archbishop Oscar Romero, Patty Hearst,=20
Fannie Lou Hamer, Paul Robeson, Pablo Neruda, Langston=20
Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Yoko Ono, Bette Davis, Simone=20
de Beauvoir, Jack Kerouac, Rachel Carson, the Dalai=20
Lama, Lenny Bruce and many others. The broadcast will=20
be presented in an educational format, focusing each=20
hour on a specific theme: Native American History,=20
Women=E2?Ts Herstory, Literature and Drama, Latino/Chicano=20
History, Eastern Philosophy, the Civil Rights=20
Movement, Civil Liberties, The Legacy of Malcolm X,=20
and so on.
In order to preserve the Pacifica Radio Archives and=20
continue to enable public access to the recordings,=20
Pacifica must take immediate steps to prevent any=20
further deterioration of the collection. According to=20
the Library of Congress, Pacifica must conduct a=20
detailed assessment of how many tapes are in immediate=20
need of reformatting, and then hire an experienced=20
preservation transfer engineer to transfer the tapes=20
to a new medium, such as digital audio.=20
