Programming Committee Minutes 4-11-06

The meeting convened at 7:00 pm. Members in attendance were Rych Withers,
David Gendron, Randy Stover and Vic Bedoian.

The Minutes of the 3-14-06 meeting were approved.

There was a discussion about how to evaluate the Cambodian program, since it
is broadcast in the Cambodian language. It was decided that the producer,
Lay Prum would be asked to provide a summary of a typical program in
English, and that the committee would review the broadcast for technical
points.

The Sierra Nevada Earth First program was reviewed as part of the second
round of program evaluations. Those who had listened to the program thought
it was interesting and well produced. It was noted that the one-hour format
works better that a half-hour for the program because there is more time to
do interviews and take listener calls. The Program Director will try to
find a one-hour time slot that will be appropriate for the program.

The Earthbeat program was reviewed. The program was considered very well
and expertly produced. The only suggestion was that the station and
program identification should be done more often. The PD will discuss the
evaluation with the programmer, Annie Compton-Schmidt.

The committee discussed a collaborative program proposal by Bob Lambert and
Bill Trayler to do a music program featuring local music and live
performance and features on interesting and unique Fresno people, arts and
enterprises. The proposal was well received, as Lambert and Trayler are
both experienced radio programmers with extensive musical and cultural
contacts in the Fresno area. The PD will work on finding an appropriate
time for the program.

There was a general discussion about the Saturday and Sunday evening KFCF
music programs. The discussion focused on the idea of condensing the
programs into a single four-hour block on Saturday. and opening up Sunday
evening for the arts and literature programming broadcast on KPFA. This
move would require the Saturday music shows to condense to two hours (from
four), and moving the Sunday 6:30 pm local programs to Saturday at 6:30 pm.
This discussion was prompted by comments from many subscribers and Program
Committee members to have more arts programming on KFCF. For many years the
Sunday night KPFA shows have been covered up by local programs. This is an
issue because literary programming has been reduced in recent years. The
discussion is an attempt to rationalize that disparity. The PD will explore
the idea with the various programmers involved.

The next meeting date was set for May 9, 2006 at 7 pm in the KFCF office.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.
